Insane Index Infection

Well folks, just when I thought things were getting to the hunky dory stage of healing and recovery, I hit a road bump which has sidelined me for a longer time away from work and my home.

I developed what I thought was a small infection in one of my wounds from surgery. I saw my doctor and she immediately signed me up for daily nursing care to clean and dress the wound daily and keep an eye on things. She also referred me to a plastic surgeon for a follow up to see if everything was cool. I was banking on a clean bill of health by then (my appointment with the surgeon was on Monday) and then I could be on my way!

Well, the universe had something else in store for me. When the plastic surgeon saw my finger he chastised me for leaving Montreal and interrupting care etc etc and then proceeded to rip off alllllll the dead black skin that covered my entire finger in a series of quick jerks and snips of the scissors. While I pride myself on having an iron stomach and being able to handle most squeamish events, the act of literally ripping off an entire finger's worth of dead black skin akin to peeling an orange had me gagging. It wasn't painful thankfully, I attribute that to a perfect mix of painkillers and nerve damage!

Anyways, once the surgeon removed the skin, he revealed a HUGE nasty hole that was conveniently hidden beneath what I lovingly call the zombie skin sock. I gasped, took a picture obviously, and asked if that white thing in the hole was my bone. It was not my finger bone but a nice white clean tendon!! YAY!!

So now I am dealing with a secondary, very superficial but nonetheless troubling infection in my already traumatized finger. I was desperately hoping to begin my travel back to Wemindji this week and hopefully participate in some of the Christmas festivities in the classroom, take the great burden of looking after precious boy Bobo off the shoulders of my friends, get back to a sense of normalcy - but that has all been thrown out the window as I have been sidelined once again with finger troubles.

Now I am impatiently waiting to heal so I can go back to Wemindji for what's left of this holiday season, get my dog, Christmas presents I had shipped to my home there pre-zombie finger and clothes etc etc and return to Oakville to rest up for my return to Wemindji in January!

I am however happy to report that I am finished with my HORRIBLE antibiotics and don't need the heavy painkillers anymore which is great. The side effects were really doing a number on me and I had to put up with a lot of nasty things that were very much harshing my vibe.

The upside to all this is that I have been able to see a lot of family who have been visiting me often as well as participating in some family  holiday traditions I have missed out on in the past 4 years being so far away! I definitely though miss the classroom and my northern family terribly and am having nightmares I miss Bobo so much and I really can't wait for this whole ordeal to be over!!! I am also taking this time and convenient access to healthcare to get a lot of issues addressed that due to location and circumstance I wasn't able to adequately treat. I've been a constant figure at my local clinic and doctors office in hopes that I can start to heal my broken body! So, fingers crossed (ha ha) this will be over soon and I can start back in my regular life and really get to enjoy the holidays!!

Update: I still have not plucked my eyebrows or applied makeup since Friday November 18th but have mastered the art of getting dressed, showering, putting on deodorant, eating a burger, texting (sorta) and brushing teeth one handed!! Yay for me!!
